Finding athleticwear is an absolute nightmare. God forbid we have some comfy, flattering, NON-TOXIC workout clothing.

Sure, it's easy enough to find leggings that are squat-proof and make your butt look good. They're expensive, but at least they exist.

The thing is, I don't even care about the price tag. It's just that the kind of leggings that hug your body the right way are made of synthetic fabrics like polyester, polyamide, and nylon, which can expose you to BPA, PFAs (forever chemicals), and phthalates. These are endocrine disruptors linked to:

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Fertility issues

  • Breast cancer

  • Reproductive harm

Great for the booty, terrible for your hormones.

Although non-toxic activewear is skyrocketing in popularity as people become more concerned with health, it's nearly impossible to find a clean option (cotton, bamboo viscose, Tencel, etc.) that has the same flattering fit and hugs you in all the right places.

Now, I haven't tried even close to every brand of athleticwear. But I have tried quite a few. Some toxic, some non. So here are my no-bullshit, honest reviews of some brands sitting in my closet.

Non-Toxic Fitness Brand Reviews

Pact

I have tirelessly researched clean athleticwear, and Pact was among the few brands that seemed reputable...not that there are many options.

Pact's leggings are 90% cotton and 10% elastane. I had high hopes because the reviews are overwhelmingly good, and they're an industry leader in sustainable clothing.

I ordered the On-the-Go Legging, Boot Cut Legging (they don't have these anymore), and the Everyday Shelf Bra Cropped Camisole. All in a size small.

The camisole: It's of good quality and fits well. I don't know if I would consider it cropped, but I'm short, so maybe it's just me. Although I don't regularly reach for this top, it's comfortable and makes a great undershirt.

The leggings: I'm always a size small...ALWAYS. So as you can imagine, I was very disappointed when I pulled the leggings on and could stretch them past my titties (literally).

I thought cotton was "less stretchy," but these things had more stretch than any clothing item I've ever worn.

Since I wasn't looking for a legging/bra combo, I exchanged the bottoms for an extra small. They definitely fit better, but they still too much stretch for me. Maybe they just aren't meant for petites.

In the photo below, you'll notice bunched up fabric around my upper thighs. I think this issue could be resolved if Pact offered different inseams. Even an extra small just had way too much fabric.

Throughout the day, the leggings get loose and sag, so I constantly have to pull up. The seam in the back also does that thing where it gets of loose and saggy, giving you a diaper butt.

Overall, I just don't find these leggings very flattering. They're decent when trying them on, but when wearing them for an entire day, they're just annoying and uncomfortable.

I find myself wearing jeans just to avoid wearing Pact's leggings. (GASP, not jeans).

Legging rating: 6/10

  • Run large

  • Too much stretch

  • Diaper butt

  • Don't offer shorter inseams

  • Fabric is great

Top rating: 8/10

  • Great quality

  • Good fit

  • Comfortable

Mate the Label

Mate is another industry leader in non-toxic and sustainable athleticwear. And it's expensive, running around $60 for a single sports bra. I still can't believe I paid $120 for TWO bras. Wow.

I ordered the Stretch Scoop Bra and the Stretch V-Neck Bra, which are 92% cotton and 8% spandex.

Price aside, I LOVE them. They are so comfy and cute. Both show the girls off, but they do have more conservative designs if that's not your thing.

I wear the Stretch Scoop Bra nearly every day, except when I have to wash it. It keeps its shape extremely well, and it's so comfortable that I forget I'm wearing a bra at all.

If you're gifted in the melons department, you might find yourself spilling out if you choose to wear this bra to the gym...Maybe don't do any running or jumping.

As for the V-Neck Bra, I love it, but find myself choosing it less. Mostly because I've noticed the sides stretch out a little bit throughout the day. It gets a little loose around the side boob area, which is a little concerning when wearing it to the gym.

I was too afraid to try Mate's leggings because they're $88 and I don't have high hopes (based on reviews and photos) that they would fit the way I want them to. The leggings are also 92% cotton and 8% spandex, so I was worried they would get loose throughout the day similarly to the V-Neck Bra and Pact's On-the-Go Leggings.

Bra rating: 9/10

  • Certain items lose shape or become loose throughout wearing

  • Extremely comfy and flattering

  • Great quality

Boody

Years ago, I bought two pairs of leggings from Boody, and although they aren't the best leggings I've ever worn, they're pretty good. Since Boody has evolved into an underwear brand and no longer offers these leggings.

So...why am I reviewing them?

I think Boody deserves to be recognized for their good quality products. I've had these leggings for a couple of years now, and they haven't pilled AT ALL. They're made from bamboo viscose and are really comfy.

While I haven't tried their underwear (yet), I can say that the quality is good and I would recommend the brand overall for comfort and quality.

Rating: 8/10

  • Good quality

  • Great customer service

Namarie

Namarie is a non-toxic athleticwear brand with leggings closely resembling options made from synthetic fabrics, which was appealing to me. We want that synthetic fit without the toxins, right?

I took a chance on this brand because they were having a seemingly great sale—buy one, get one on their leggings. In hindsight, maybe this sale was a red flag that I overlooked.

I made my order on November 12, 2025, and I still haven't received it over two months later. And yes, I have been in contact with their support.

First, Namarie staff said that items had not arrived from the manufacturer, but reassured me that they were figuring it out. Okay, fine, I'm a reasonable person.

After more time had passed, I reached out again. They assured me (once again) my order would be shipped in 72 hours. Of course, it wasn't shipped in 72 hours.

I finally asked for a refund, and haven't heard back since. Which sucks because I was looking forward to trying their products.

If anything changes, I'll update this review. But for now, I definitely would not recommend this brand. I'm not even sure Namarie is a legit business at this point.

Rating: 0/10

  • Might be a scam?

Namarie is a scam
I think I got scammed.

Final Thoughts

Maybe I'm just picky, but despite the massive market of workout brands, there just isn't one that checks off all my boxes.

I guess I have to accept that truly non-toxic, booty-shaping leggings still aren't quite perfect on the market yet. Although synthetic fabrics can be terrible for your health, it's tough to give up that perfect body-hugging, compressive fit they offer.

That said, things are slowly improving. Brands like Pact and MATE the Label are getting closer to that ideal combo of safe materials, decent shaping, and real workout performance.

They're not 100% there yet, but they're worth trying if you're ready to experiment. Until then, I'll keep holding out for the day when health, comfort, and form-fitting shape don't have to be mutually exclusive.
